Holi (होली)- Popular Indian Festivals

One of the most popular festivals of India Holi, the festivals of colors is celebrated in the month of Phalgun according to the Gregorian calendar. This festival is very popular in all over India as it brings happiness and friendship when we play together with the colors of joy.
Many people prepare themselves well on this special occasion of festival. For kids, it is a festival of joy as they use different kind Pichkaries and colors to lure each other. Elders also play on this festival with each others and color with Gullal and much other type of colors.

Womenfolk also start preparations for the Holi as they cook loads of Gujiya, Mathri and Papri for their friends and family. It is also a season of spring which is celebrated through Holi festival.

There are so many top Indian festivals, which are popular among all Indians, but Holi has its unique history and chapters to explain. It is specially celebrated by the Hindu peoples as it is popularly known as Hindu festival.

Holika Dahan is the major activity done by the peoples on the eve of Holi. This tradition is more popular in Gujarat, Himachal Pradesh and Orissa to render gratefulness to Agni, god of fire. Ash left from after Holika dahan is applied by the people on their foreheads as they consider it as sacred which will save them from evil forces.

On this superb occasion of festival people play with colors in the day time. Almost all shops and offices remain close on that day. Some people used to drink on this occasion to enjoy the festival, but it’s injurious for health to drink in excess and spoils the spirit. It’s my personal experience as I have many people drunkard and sleeping over the roads and streets. Some of them used to have bhang according to the traditional way of celebrating Holi.
